How is your garden growing this year? After last year’s horrific summer and this year’s slow spring start, I for one am left trying to salvage the damage caused to my back garden.

Like golfing, I’m very much a fair weather gardener (not ideal in our climate) and really love being outdoors weeding and pruning and then enjoying the results of what I’ve wanted. But I love nothing better than lolling in my hammock with a good book and a cup of tea on a lovely spring or summer’s day...taking no notice of those lurking weeds. After all, as my great-grandfather used to say “a weed is simply a flower growing in the wrong place.” This month’s Image is a gardening special featuring lots of lovely gardens to visit, tips on decorating summerhouses and the chance to win tickets to one of the UK’s top gardening shows.

Every year , gardeners with beautiful outdoors spaces throw open their gates to let the public roam around them for inspiration and ideas. The National Open Gardens Scheme has some wonderful gardens available to view this month in our area and some have plant sales.

Chelsea Flower Show celebrates its centenary this year and, with sustainable living a popular theme, Hannah Stephenson looks at the importance of wildife in the garden on page 34. Talking of Chelsea, this important year in its history also marks a momentual moment with Northamptonshire connections as it will be the first time garden gnomes are allowed at the famous show.

The floral theme continues in our food pages on 71 with recipes from NewYork’s Miche Bacher’s new book Cooking With Flowers. And it’s flower power all round as fashion goes crazy for pretty petal dresses, trousers and tops featured from page 52.

“N’er cast a clout til May is out” so the old saying goes, but here’s hoping we’ll get the chance to put on some of the fabulous footwear featured in our summer shoes round-up on page 58. I’ve got a gorgeous pair of Vivienne Westwood slingbacks that I wore only once last summer because the weather was so lousy. I certainly hope I’ll be wearing them at a lovely garden party this year with a lovely cocktail and in good company!
